Septimius Severus. AD 193-211. AR Denarius (17mm, 2.62 g, 12h). Rome mint. Struck AD 197. L SEPT SEV PERT [AVG IMP VIIII], laureate head right / HERCVLI DEFENS, Hercules, standing right and resting on club, holding bow with lion's skin draped over arm. Cf. RIC IV 97; cf. RSC 212. VF, toned, light porosity. Typical compact flan.

Hercules, along with Liber (Bacchus), was one of the special deities of Leptis Magna, the birthplace of Severus. Additionally, it was Hercules who was the patron deity and inspiration for Severus in his defeat of Clodius Albinus in 197.
