Victoria Specimen 25 Cents 1882-H SP68 PCGS, Heaton mint, KM5. Yet another exceptionally rare Heaton Mint Superb Gem specimen offering from the Eric Beckman Collection, this example entirely unlike the rest, with surfaces that are essentially blast white and only hold the the most microscopic trace of color. While collector preferences will certainly vary with regards to toned coins versus white ones, the tone-free nature of this specimen allows for an unprecedented view of what these Heaton Mint presentation pieces must have looked like the second they were removed from the dies. Fully impressed throughout, the first noteworthy observance is the texture in the fields. While certainly reflective, the artifact lines of significant die preparation are seen on both sides, over essentially every flat area, with the result being more sparkle, akin to a diamond's facets, than a fully mirrored coin. On the raised design, moderate frost is seen, and when viewed against the fields, creates a cameo-like appearance. As the grade suggest, the surfaces are essentially flawless. Interestingly enough, the PCGS census reflects only three records of this date in specimen - all showing in SP68! While certainly not am impossible occurrence, we think it more plausible that one if not more of these records reflect a resubmission in hopes that it would come back in the unheard of, but conceivable SP69 grade. Whatever the facts, the beauty and rarity of this coin remain undeniable. A landmark opportunity for the collector looking to acquire an example of this Victoria type in what is in essence, its purest numismatic form. From The Eric Beckman Collection of Canadian Coins
