Bavaria. Ludwig II gold Proof 10 Mark 1875-D PR66 Cameo NGC, Munich mint, KM898, Jaeger-196. An extremely rare proof date, obviously distributed in very limited quantities, with a search of archived records revealing no other examples. The present piece, obviously carefully handled since its minting, has acquired a partial sheath of attractive tone, likely from long-time cabinet storage, that is mostly rich yellow-gold in hue, but displays brief instances of copper-colored essence. Closer inspection reveals underlying surfaces that are superbly preserved, with no visible post-strike imperfections on either side. Light frost on the central devices serves to confirm the cameo designation.
