Hamburg. Free City gold Proof 5 Mark 1877-J PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC, Hamburg mint, KM605, Jaeger-208. One-year type. A great and well-known rarity among German proof gold specialists, with archived records revealing only a single example (the present coin) passing through auctions in the U.S. and in Europe over a nearly 15-year span. Likewise, this is the only the graded example in either the NGC or PCGS population reports...and what a beauty it is! An exquisitely produced coin, the proof surfaces behold all the qualities that collectors find desirable; the highpoints are crisply defined and thickly frosted, while the fields hold mirror-like reflectivity throughout. Additionally, many generations of collectors obviously preserved this piece with great care, as evidence of handling is minuscule where present, with no instance being of significant visual impediment. Altogether, a great coin, and for the collector looking to acquire an irreplaceable coin from this exceptionally well-accomplished collection, the present piece must certainly be put near the top of the list. From The Kaiser Collection of German Gold Coins
