Hesse-Darmstadt. Ludwig III gold 5 Mark 1877-H MS66 NGC, Darmstadt mint, KM356, Jaeger-215. One-year type. An immaculate survivor of this high-demand issue, fully prooflike in the fields, and likely the finest preserved example of its kind. Upon close inspection, no eye-catching marks are apparent and a delicate frosting of the raised central devices adds the hint of cameo appearance. The strike shows no weakness either, with fully pronounced detail that makes its way from the focal centers through to the dentils at the far edges of the design. As one might predict, no finer examples have been certified at either NGC or PCGS, with our search of archived auctions yielding no comparable examples either; an exceptional coin! From The Kaiser Collection of German Gold Coins
