Schwarzburg-Sondershausen. Karl Günther gold Proof 20 Mark 1896-A PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC, Berlin mint, KM151. Jaeger-287. One-year type. An especially highly sought issue, not only because of the rarity of this single-year issue in proof format, but also because it exists as the only gold coin of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen struck during the German Empire period. Infrequently offered in business strike or proof form, proofs are particularly elusive, with our lone offering coming in January of 2013 when we sold an NGC-graded PR65. That coin, a fine piece in its own right, realized $9,987.50, but close inspection of the images and the present coin, clearly point to the present coin's superiority. Deeply cameoed throughout, the fields retain uncommon smoothness, and pleasing old cabinet orange-gold tone concentrates at the peripheral legends. Without the aid of a loupe, both sides appear to approach flawless; an attribute that should certainly pleasing the most-discerning collector. One of two finest-certified examples graded by NGC, with the other example recently crossing the block in a May 2015 Sincona auction where it hammered for 17,000 Swiss Francs, or $18,438 exchanged at the time of the sale. From The Kaiser Collection of German Gold Coins
