German New Guinea
German Colony gold Proof 20 Mark 1895-A PR66 Cameo PCGS, Berlin mint, KM9, Jaeger-709. Mintage: 1,500 (for both Proof and Business Strike). A magnificent beauty, widely heralded as one of the finest designs in all of numismatics, capturing the bird-of-paradise, one of the most curious species of animal in all the world, mid-dance and plumes spread, perched atop a forest branch. On the reverse, the composition is more traditional, yet still entirely elegant in its execution, with a bow-tied palm wreath surrounding the denomination and date. The present example, among the very finest known, and currently the finest certified by PCGS, has even more attributes than its technical high level of preservation suggests. Cameo contrast, not always evident on this issue, adds further allure, contributing emphasis to the raised design when observed against the gleaming fields. Additionally, subtle tone in apricot-orange hue moves over both sides, highlighting some highpoints, but mostly lightly touching the fields. When viewed at an angle, the typical linear die polish lines are observed, and should not be considered anything but an artifact of production; a glass shows a couple tiny ticks that prevent perfection. Truly, a world-class coin in all regards, and one of the most notable standouts in this amazing Kaiser Collection. We wish all bidders good luck! From The Kaiser Collection of German Gold Coins

Estimate: 50000-70000 USD
