Charles III gold Escudo 1760 Mo-MM AU55 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM116, Cal-632. Attractive for the assigned grade with strong luster and contact marks well within the confines of the designation. Choice for this rare date and type – absent from the Gerber collection -, and vastly superior to the Norweb and Eliasberg coins. It also appears sharper than the Caballero de las Yndias specimen (probably the other piece currently certified at AU55 by NGC, see following) and is one of the very finest seen of the date by the cataloguer. Currently tied with a single other coin as the finest certified of the date by NGC, rare and most desirable in this charming quality. The cataloguer notes the offerings of the lesser, yet somewhat comparable specimens in the Eric Newman Collection (Heritage 1/2014, lot 30859 hammered for $2,800) and the aforementioned Caballero de las Yndias (Aureo 4/2009, lot 384 hammered for E2,300) collections in recent years. This better preserved piece should fetch a higher price. From The Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins
