Charles III gold 2 Escudos 1766/5 Mo-MF AU50 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM129 (unlisted as an overdate), cf. Cal-467 (unlisted overdate). Clearly a 1766/5 overdate, though not identified as such on the insert. An outstanding example of this rare date, with substantial subdued luster and sharp detail throughout. One of the nicest seen of the entire type, together with the ex-Huntington example dated 1769 (Morton and Eden, 3/2013 lot 288 hammered for GBP3,000) and the ex-Eliasberg example dated 1767 (ANR 4/2005 lot 3150 hammered for $4,400). The latter piece (graded AU53 NGC) and the present coin are the highest currently certified by NGC. Very rare and desirable in this charming quality. From The Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins
