Charles III gold 4 Escudos 1760 Mo-MM AU53 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM140, Cal-316. A most attractive coin for the designation, boldly struck with considerable luster in the fields and limited high-point friction, while the present handling marks are well within the confines of the assigned grade. One of the classic rarities of the entire Mexican Colonial gold series with ten or less pieces known of the date, and one of the few major types missing from the Gerber group. The cataloguer notes two somewhat comparable, yet lesser specimens sold in the past few years: the ex Newcomer-Eliasberg coin (Stack's 1/2010, lot 1180 for $14,000) and the Caballero de las Yndias specimen (Aureo 4/2009, lot 395 for E19,000). Currently the single finest certified example of this two year-type by NGC, among the very finest examples seen by the cataloguer. Destined to boast the most prestigious pedigree after its acquisition by the lucky next owner, thus a coin bound to attract spirited bidding competition. Ex.
