Charles III gold 8 Escudos 1784/3 Mo-FF AU Details (Polished) NGC, Mexico City mint, KM156.2, Onza-779. Sharply detailed on both sides with lightly polished surfaces, little actual wear and contact marks mostly visible on the obverse; overall retaining decent eye-appeal. An extremely rare date/assayer combination with 5 confirmed examples by the cataloguer, two of which are permanently impounded as follows:- the Onza plate coin, Fine in appearance.- a specimen in the ex-Licio Lagos collection (Museo Soumaya in Mexico City), not examined.- the specimen in the Banco de Mexico collection, VG-F.- the present coin.- an example publicly sold in 2012, described as "Extremely Fine". (Ponterio 1/2011, lot 116 hammered for $30,000).The NGC register lists a coin certified as "VF" that may be the latter example. If not, it would represent a sixth specimen. The key to complete the Charles III regular bust issues, and among the rarest Mexico Mint milled 8 Escudos, thus most desirable despite the defects noted on the insert. An opportunity unlikely to be repeated for years to come. From The Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins

Estimate: 12000-15000 USD
