Charles IV gold 4 Escudos 1806/5 Mo-TH AU58 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM144, cf. Cal-227 (unlisted overdate). Lustrous and with hardly any wear, yet slightly porous on the bust as a result of the deteriorated punch of the bust that was used to create the die. The latter characteristic can also be observed on several 8 Escudos (see for example Heritage 4/2014, lot 25405) and a few 8 Reales of the same date (see Heritage 1/2015, lot 30314) and was a result of the scarcity of good quality steel to produce the dies and an interesting commentary can be made here. Similar defects can also be seen on a few observed Mexican 8 Escudos dated 1800 (see Heritage 1/2015, lot 30317 for a dramatic case in point) and were naturally detected by the Madrid mint when reviewing the samples sent from Mexico City. Thus, a Royal Ordinance dated February 8, 1801 was sent to Mexico to "correct the defects noticed on the samples corresponding to the renditions of April, May and June 1800" (see AGI, Mexico, legajo 2798 for the original document). The reply from the Mexico Mint director was telling, since he explained that "on one hand, the volume of the mintages does not sometimes allow to deal with these small burdens, and additionally, the current extreme scarcity of steel is forcing us to extend the use of the dies more than would be desired, so as to delay the fabrication of new dies and puncheons as much as possible". By 1806, the situation had indeed worsened and a Royal Ordinance dated August 18, 1806 advised to deal with the defects noted on the samples of the early renditions of said year. The present coin naturally belongs to one of those renditions. A neatly historical piece and a highly desirable type coin, rare in this engaging quality. From The Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins
