Charles IV gold "EFLIX" 8 Escudos 1797 Mo-FM AU53 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM159, Onza-1029. The popular variety with the "EFLIX" error on the reverse legend. Attractive for the designation with highly lustrous surfaces, only slight wear on the higher points and entirely devoid of offensive contact marks. A very scarce variety in any grade, missing from Norweb, Gerber and Eliasberg, conditionally rare and very desirable in this charming quality. Currently the single example listed in NGC's census, and one of the three finest seen by the cataloguer, the two other candidates being the Onza plate coin and a coin sold in 2001 (Ponterio 1/2001, lot 926). The latter was lauded as "possibly the finest example known" by said noted authority on Mexican coins and appears entirely similar to the present example. From The Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins
