Charles IV gold 8 Escudos 1801/0 Mo-FT/M MS61 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM159 (unlisted overassayer), cf. Onza-1035 (unlisted overassayer). Lustrous Mint State with a bold overdate, few noticeable surface handling marks, and a tad softly struck in the centers as usual. The FT/M overassayer variety, although faint, appears certain with small portions of the underlying "M" to either side of the "F". Although unlisted in both KM and the Onza reference book, this particular variety of the overdate has been observed on some coins by the cataloguer including - amazingly! - in the following lot, which was struck from the same pair of dies. It has apparently gone unnoticed since it would only seem apparent on high grade pieces such as the two aforementioned present ones. Non-overassayer coins also exist, such as the Onza plate coin, which is naturally from a different reverse die. A rare and desirable technical grade for this scarce issue. From The Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins
