Congo Free State - Leopold II "Roi Des Belges" Proof 5 Francs 1887 PR66 NGC, Brussels mint, KM8.2. Only 100 examples of this legend type were struck, with proofs being considered even rarer, and quite possibly unique, as our search has found no other modern sales of the type in proof grade. This coin however, unquestionably minted to proof standards, showcases prominent reflectivity, with the eye-pleasing addition of tone from presentation-case storage that has left olive-gold color in the fields and exceptional multicolored highlights surrounding most of the raised designs. Further, the strike was executed with evident care, producing raised wire rims on both sides and impressive sharpness on the letters and central motifs. Frost on the central design imparts a pleasing cameo effect and no noteworthy imperfects are found. Mention of this issue in the 1923 journal, Revue Belge de Numismatique (A Mahieu: "Numismatique du Congo") alludes to the great importance of this piece, and given its long-heralded rarity, should solidify it as one of the most collectible crowns of Africa.
