Joao V gold 12800 Reis (Dobra) 1730-B AU58 NGC, Bahia mint, KM141, Russo-101. Bahia mint "B" Dobras are undeniably one of the most coveted series in Luso-Brazilian numismatics. This noteworthy example features the 2nd shield motif and is often referred to as the "Sea Horse" type because of the ornamental detailing of the reverse shield. A bold specimen in all regards, with ambered surfaces that retain original luster and pleasing devices that are thoroughly-struck. Faint adjustment marks through the King's hair extend towards the date; however, they are nicely camouflaged by the surrounding curls and trace evidence of circulation, while noted, is commensurate with the assigned grade. An altogether premium representative from this fleeting, three-year series.Since gold was scarce in the Bahia region of Brazil, most of the 12800 Reis were struck at the Minas Gerais mint, and to a lesser extent, the Rio mint. Thus, Bahia mint Dobras are considered the rarest of this 12800 Reis type. Additionally, coins minted in Bahia were typically crude--both from the dies and because of the striking process--so acquiring a choice, problem-free example such as the present offering is an incredibly difficult feat.
