Charles III gold 8 Escudos 1761/0 PN-J MS62 NGC, Popayan mint, KM38.2, cf. Onza-791. A spectacular example of this rarely-encountered overdate issue, struck during the reign of Charles III and featuring the bust of Ferdinand VI, with noticeably sharp central design elements that are crisply detailed and some softness noted within the outer peripheries. The overdate, while showing on a partial "0", is easily identifiable without magnification, and adds another layer of interest to this engaging selection. Fully golden surfaces retain a substantial amount of original luster and the fields contain minimal marks for the technical quality. Few examples of this overdate issue have been offered in the marketplace over the past several years, and population reports suggest that there are only a small number of certified examples of which to compare. Even so, this current offering holds the title for finest-known, in addition to being the only Mint State piece graded by either major service. A thoroughly charming specimen that is rare in both condition and availability, most alluring as such.
