Republic Peso 1863-POPAYAN F15 NGC, Popayan mint, KM139.2, Elizondo-53 (this coin). A wholesome coin, attractive for the designation with even wear, still sharp details and free of any distracting flaws. Extremely rare one-year type with 5 confirmed examples, of which this is the second finest, behind a XF45 NGC coin, and for which no Mint state coins exist, the Von-Schuckmann piece -a holed Good example being the norm rather than the exception. That aforementioned XF45 specimen hammered at $14,500 as lot 2433 in Goldbergs 5/2008 sale, while the present example was considered special enough by noted author Carlos Elizondo as to warrant a plate in his classic reference "Eight Reales and Pesos of the New World". The key to complete the Colombian Republican crown type series, very rare and desirable in this unflawed preservation.
