German East Africa
German Colony - Wilhelm II 2 Rupien 1893 MS64 NGC, Berlin mint, KM5. A rare coin in any grade, it is especially scarce in Choice Mint State condition. Indeed, NGC's census data reveals that a total of 32 circulation strike examples have been graded, though just 9 have been graded 64 or higher. We were fortunate enough to offer another MS64 in our auction in April of this year. However, that piece was a technical 64; it had a number of hairlines in the fields. This coin has very minimal marks and exceptionally clean field; the few marks more readily noted on the obverse appear to be simply reeding marks, and thus cannot be counted against the coin. Further adding to its appeal is lovely natural toning. In the opinion of this cataloger, even though they both bear the same technical grade, he would easily choose the present specimen over the one we sold in April. That previous example sold for $6,756, and so collectors should bid accordingly for the current piece.
