Martin II - St. Blasien Abbey gold Medallic 10 Ducats 1783 MS63 NGC, Gunzburger-151b, Binder-52. 41.5mm/34.9gms. By A. Guillemard. Obv. Bust of abbot right. Rev. Church view from above, monastery in focus; forested hills surrounding. A marvelous medallic work, with the engraved portrait of Martin (II) Gerbert, the genius behind and caretaker of St. Blasien Abbey, having been accomplished painstakingly, his face showing expressive contour, while his robe and hat hold impressive linear detail. Similarly, the reverse illustrates seldom-rivaled technical skill, with the great dome displaying excellent architectural dimensionality, and the surrounding forest rounding out the visual masterpiece. Impressively, this hefty gold relic has escaped nearly all forms of handling, with bright mirrored reflectivity remaining in the fields and raised motifs that sit in cameo-like contrast. No eye-catching marks are seen. Struck in commemoration of the completion of the re-built monastery at St. Blasien abbey in 1783. Today, the monastery, affectionately named the "Black Forest Dome", is still standing and can be visited in the remote Alb Valley in south-east Germany. A unique treasure for the collector of multiple ducats, or the connoisseur of historic architecture.

Estimate: 30000-40000 USD
