George IV gold Proof 5 Pound 1826 PR64 Cameo NGC, Royal mint, KM702, S-3797, WR-213. A classic piece in the British series that has only become more popular in recent years. A total of 79 examples of this type have been graded by NGC and PCGS, out of a supposed mintage of just 150. With such a large percentage of the existing population being seen by the third-party grading services, we can get a pretty good idea of the preservation level of this type. Between the two services, just 10 have been graded 64 or higher. When one factors out coins that lack the desirable "Cameo" designation, one is left with just 7 pieces that are graded "64 Cameo" or better, meaning that the present specimen ranks in the top 10% of all known examples of this type. The recent price surge for the 1826 proof 5 Pound certainly reflects an acute increase in demand. To give some context, in April 2013 we sold an NGC PR63 Ultra Cameo for $32,500 hammer. Just a year and a half after that, in September 2014, we sold a PCGS PR63 for $57,500 hammer. That would seem to suggest that in just that relatively short time period, from January 2013 to September 2014, the type nearly doubled in value. And yet it has continued to climb higher; in our last auction, in April 2015, we sold a PCGS PR62 Cameo for an amazing $65,000 hammer. All of this points to an almost frenzied demand for this type. With a coin in as elite of a grade as the current specimen, one almost thinks that the sky is the limit in terms of its possible final price. Not only is it a technical near-Gem, but it possesses pleasant light red toning and very minimal handling in the fields for a type that often comes with moderate to heavy hairlines. Overall a splendid coin, and one that we are proud to offer as part of our 2015 ANA Platinum Night Auction.

Estimate: 90000-110000 USD
