Genoa. Dogi Biennali gold 2 Doppie 1627 MS64 NGC, KM28, Fr-418. A rare and exceptionally high grade example of this gold multiple. Well struck on a large flan with no marks worth mentioning. One of the last hammered issues of Italy, evocative of much earlier, Medieval issues, this coin depicts a stylized castle on the obverse and a cross on the reverse. While other issuing authorities at this time had begun including ornate busts and other elaborate design elements, this issue from Genoa retained a much more simplistic, yet elegant, style. It was very shortly after this coin was struck that Genoa followed its contemporaries and began producing coinage with its famed Madonna and Child motif. Therefore, it is perhaps not incorrect to call this coin one of the last Medieval issues of Italy, just before the more popular Baroque style was adopted.
