Modena. Francesco III d'Este Scudo 1739 AU58 NGC, KM-C12.1, Dav-1392. Spectacular from all angles, this broad specimen presents olive-tinged patination highlighted by a substantial amount of original luster that peeks through the legends and enshrouds the design elements in a subtle, golden glow. The Duke of Modena is well-styled, from the tight curls of his hair to the elegant draping of his ceremonial uniform, and the ornate shield upon the reverse is elaborately decorated and highly pleasing. For a type that is often encountered in grades of VF-EF, this nearly-Mint State selection stands out as far and above one of the nicest examples that we've seen. Currently the finest-known and only certified specimen of this singular issue, highly-desirable as such.
