James VIII gold Pattern Guinea 1716 MS65 NGC, S-5726, Matthew Young restrike, c. 1828. The dies for this type were originally produced in 1716 in Paris by Norbert Roettiers for when Prince James the Pretender made his second attempt to claim the throne of England. While no specimens were struck at the time, the dies somehow found their way over a century later into the hands of the British coin dealer Matthew Young, who produced an unknown number of novelty strikings for collectors in both gold and silver. While the mintage figures are not known, it would seem that the gold are extremely rare. A fair amount of die rust makes this coin easily recognizable as a restrike, though it still is in exceptional condition for a coin nearly two centuries old. Significant cartwheel luster and minimal marks gives this interesting and historically significant piece great appeal.
