South Africa
Republic Proof 5 Shillings 1892 PR63 NGC, KM8.2. Double Shaft variety. With an estimated mintage of just 25-30 pieces. An imposing example of this South African crown. Highly lustrous surfaces with faint toning beginning to creep in from the edges. This is the only South African proof 1892 5 shilling that we have ever offered for sale. Indeed, only a handful have been on the open market in the last decade. The last example we can find to have sold was another NGC PR63 sold by St. James in October, 2011, which hammered at 15,500 GBP ($24,147). With so few price records, and yet so many collectors of South African coins, it's hard to say whether this example will surpass that mark set four years ago, but we await eagerly to see.
Estimate: 20000-22000 USD
