Gustav II Adolf Piefort Riksdaler (12 Mark) 1617 F15 NGC, KM-XM7, SM-81. 28.2gm. Struck in Stockholm as largesse (the bestowing or giving of money or gifts to others) which was thrown into the crowd of spectators who attended royal coronations and funerals beginning in the 16th century in Sweden. This particular example of medallic coinage was struck for the coronation of the 23 year-old Gustav II Adolf and depicts his portrait with the Hebrew inscription of Jehovah above and three Coats of Arms below: Sweden, House of Vasa, and Götaland. The reverse features a sun shining down upon a lily that is growing through a crown. The overall appearance of this example is extremely pleasing, with lightly-patinated surfaces and even-wear across the design elements. An altogether extremely scarce type that is rarely available in the marketplace.Gustav II Adolf ruled during a tumultuous era; however, under his leadership (which began at the age of 16), he successfully turned the Swedish army into an impressive military force, influenced the political and religious climate of Europe during and after the Thirty Years' War, and was credited for turning Sweden into a dominant power within the region.

Estimate: 5000-7000 USD
