Baron Clemens von Ketteler, the German minister Plenipotentiary to China was murdered by the Boxers in June 1900 and von Waldersee was appointed Generalfeldmarschall and sent to China as the Allied Supreme Commander. On his return from China he was appointed an Honorary Knight Grand Cross (Military) of the Order of the Bath.
