CHINA. Colonists' Centennial of Peruvian Independence Gold Medal, 1921. PCGS Genuine--Scratch, Unc Details Secure Holder.
L&M-997 var. EXTREMELY RARE and possibly UNIQUE. Struck for and issued by Chinese immigrants in Peru. Conjoined arms of China and Peru; Reverse: Nine line inscription. The edge is inscribed: "ALSR. F. A. MARIA. TEGUI" and is hand applied using punches for parts of European script lettering. The beginning of this inscription is almost certainly an abbreviation of "Al Senor" (Mr.) followed by presumably the first two initials of the recipient and the surname Mariategui. A tantalizing although very tenuous clue to this piece's original owner is the surname stated on the edge which is the same as the famed Peruvian socialist writer Jose Carlos Mariategui who had grown up near to the town specifically mentioned on variant legend of lot 51240. This assertion however is undone by two major factors, first that the two initials do not match the writer's and second he was in Europe for the three years around the time this medal was struck, not returning to Peru until 1923. It may simply be case of a common surname for that area of Peru but it does demonstrate that there was some form of cooperation and integration between the Chinese colonists and the local Peruvians. Whomever received this medal they were clearly of some importance to the issuers as it is the only example to come to light which was struck in gold and to our knowledge no silver example has an edge inscription hand applied or otherwise. An enigmatic and captivating piece which only deepens the potential for discovery in this little understood series. A light scratch is present on the reverse as noted on the holder, though the visually impressive obverse is unmarred. Proof-like fields within the respective coats of arms. A terrific opportunity to add this extremely rare gold example of the issue to your collection. PCGS Genuine--Scratch, Unc Details Secure Holder.

Estimate: $7000.00- $10000.00
