CHINA. 20 Cents, Year 3 (1911). NGC MS-66.
L&M-40; K-229; Y-29; WS-0048. An incredible example of this scarce type which has spurred much debate and study into this presumed straightforward one year type. While this type is normally catalogued as being struck at the central mint in Tientsin in 1911 as the date on the coin states, classic references (Kann, Kalgan Shih, etc.) do illuminate the striking of other denominations from this series at branch mints for several years after that to which they are dated. This is information has been reexamined and expanded upon in a recent article featured in the Tan Ji Collectible Journal (2015, Vol. 6 pgs. 22-35) which examines the possible locations and time frames for the extended minting of the 10 and 20 Cent profile dragon coinage as well as identifying new observed die varieties. Included alongside the coin are original envelopes from the same original collector, scans of the paper flip for this coin, a letter from Hans M. F. Schulman from whom the collector was buying other Chinese coins and notes as well as a copy of the Article featured in Tan Ji. This example, as discussed in the aforementioned article, seems to have been struck from slightly retouched dies which indicates the likelihood that it was struck at a branch mint and was most likely done so at a time later than 1911. The denticles on this piece are clearly of the short and possibly very short variety. An excellent strike gives full detail to the profile dragon and the entirety of the surface is graced with a pleasing delicate toning with light hints of gold and azure. The finest example certified by NGC or PCGS of this type, an even more compelling distinction given the new evidence for its prolonged mintage. NGC MS-66.

Estimate: $6000.00- $8000.00
