CHINA. Pattern "Mausoleum" Dollar, Year 16 (1927). PCGS MS-61 Secure Holder.
L&M-85; K-609; Wenchao-pg. 555#898 (rarity three stars); Sun-III-4-01; WS-0130. Silver. Pattern designed by Richard Placht, Austrian medalist and engraver for the Vienna mint. Although attractive and elegant in its design, this pattern was destined to be met with disapproval. While stylistically correct, the "Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum" is lacking in some elements. Construction of the site was still under way as this pattern was being designed. Since the engraver never actually saw the site and was only supplied with a drawing, some elements were omitted. Hence, the mausoleum lacks the series of steps leading to its face. It is also noted that the engraving of Dr. Sun Yat-sen was met with disapproval from authorities in China, as it sparsely resembled his actual likeness. Mintage of only 480 pieces. Peripheral toning with high luster throughout surfaces. Quite attractive and much nicer looking than one would expect from the assigned grade. PCGS MS-61 Secure Holder.

Estimate: $20000.00- $25000.00
