L&M-871; K-688; KM-Pn90; WS-0111; Wenchao-pg. 558#901 (rarity three stars); Shanghai Museum-Mr. Shi Jiagan's Collection-pg. 124#585; Sun-III-3-19. EXTREMELY RARE. Facing bust of Governor Chang Tso Lin in civilian dress, "Memorial coin of the Commander-in-Chief" in Chinese characters above; Reverse: Two crossed flags (the Five-Colored Flag of the Republic of China and the Iron Blood Eighteen star flag of the Wuchang Uprising) Chinese legend above: "17th Year of the Republic of China" and "ONE DOLLAR" below. Crisp strike with exquisite detail concurrent with its specimen striking. Attractive toning with overcast qualities that enhance the look of the coin. A truly world-class example, one of just five at this grade level with one finer. Chang Tso Lin (sometimes known as the Mukden Tiger) rose to incredible heights from humble beginnings. Eventually rising as high as the governor of Fengtien and Generalissimo of the Republic's land and naval forces, he was murdered by Japanese militarists in a railcar explosion on June 4th, 1928.
