CHINA. Taiwan. Dollar, ND (1841-50). PCGS Genuine--Chopmark, AU Details Secure Holder.
L&M-320; K-1i; C-25.3; WS-0997. Initially designed as a form of payment, the Taiwan dollar quickly gained the approval of the people and grew in popularity. This was primarily due to its high silver content, approximately 98% fine. At this time, the Spanish 8 Reales was the most widely accepted coin being .903, just over 90% fine. The obverse depicts the God of longevity with character that signify "Seven Two by the Treasury Scales". This represents the first depiction of what later became the standard "7 Mace 2 Candareens". Two small rectangular stamps on the reverse represent makers or security marks. This is standard for this issue and should not be confused as chopmarks. It is normal for this type to be found in average to low condition, often heavily chopmarked. This example is well struck, nicely toned, showing only a small number of scattered chopmarks. A scarcer variant of the Taiwan series that falls among the later of the first issues. Quite nice for type. PCGS Genuine--Chopmark, AU Details Secure Holder.
