COORG: lead medal, 50mm, long Persian text, uniface with paper glued to the surface of the blank side, which reads "Medal - distributed by the King of Coorg among his soldiers in consequence of recent success, 1834 - 1851", EF. The Coorg War was fought between the British East India Company and the State of Coorg in 1834, after which it became a province of British India. In 1837, a major insurrection broke out in the western part of the province instigated by the Tulu-speaking Gowda farmers which was finally quelled after a lengthy drawn-out operation. The Kodava chieftains who had largely remained impervious to nationalist sentiment assisted the British with men, money and logistics, and were rewarded with land grants, titles and the Coorg medal which has English text on it. This medal is uniface with only Persian text and it is uncertain which side and in which conflict it was issued in.
