BELGIUM: Leopold I, 1831-1865, AE medal, ND, Van Hoydonck-145, 50mm, Commemorating the Opening of the Maison de Sureté Civile et Militaire at Antwerp (Anvers), medal by J. Wiener, blueprint of the jail dated 1853 & 1856 / exterior view of the jail, chocolate brown surfaces with underlying luster, Almost Unc to Unc. The Wieners were a Jewish-Flemish family of extraordinary artists and die engravers. Jacob Wiener (1815-1899), the Belgian medalist and engraver, who generally signed his medals as J. Wiener, is known more commonly as Jacques, was the eldest of three brothers [the others were Léopold (1823-1891) and Charles (1832-1888)], all of whom excelled in the art of medal engraving.
