ROMANO-BRITISH:"Coal Money" shale disc, one side with two deep circular indentations, the other with small central indentation, 46 x 8.5mm, from the Kimmeridge district in Dorset county, about 10 miles SW of Poole, with letter about this piece from Howland Wood of the American Numismatic Society, VF, RR. The Kimmeridge oil shale was used extensively by iron age British tribesmen and the Romans for armlets which were made on a primitive lathe.
