YUAN: Zhi Da, 1310-1311, AE charm (19.13g), H--, Zeno-32064 (this piece), zhi da tong bao written in four distinctive scripts, 'Phags-pa, Lautsa, Uighur and Tangut, in that order, double phoenix on reverse, a few light adhesions and some minimal cleaning in the field, still a very attractive example of the extremely rare charm, VF, RRRR, ex Shèngbidébao Collection. It is believed in Chinese culture that the phoenix only makes an appearance during periods of prosperity, peace and good government. The phoenix is also the symbol of the empress. This is possibly some type of official presentation or commemorative charm. This is the same example sold in China Guardian Auction House Spring 2006 Auction, Lot 3672 for RMB55 000 ($6,875). They mention two known examples at the time of sale. There is an extensive discussion of this remarkable piece on Zeno.

Estimate: 3,000- 5,000 USD
