Sicily, Messana Æ Litra. 317-311 BC. Head of the nymph Messana left, hair in band, wearing triple-pendant earring and necklace; MEΣΣANA before, shell and dolphin behind / Charioteer, holding goad in extended right hand, reins in left, driving biga right; ME-ΣΣANIΩN above. Exceptional, Near Extremely Fine. Fourth example known.
This reverse type, with the charioteer holding a goad rather than palm branch, was unknown until an example was published in Triton XII, 2009, lot 93 (4000 USD Hammer). This example later reappeared at Gemini Auction VI, NYINC 2010, lot 30. One further example appeared in 2013 at Hirsch Auction 293, lot 2088. Our last example; Roma E-Sale 7, lot 70 (April 2014)
