Provenance: H.F. Guard Collection, Spink Auction 182, 29 June 2006, lot 534.

William Callister (1851-1905), linen and woollen draper and silk mercer, had premises at 41 Victoria street, Douglas, and 38 Michael street, Peel. He married Sophie Patience Cretney (1850-96) on 22 April 1875 and they had seven children between 1878 and 1894. By early 1900 Callister's business was in serious trouble and, even after a heavily-advertised clearance sale at Victoria street he owed over £17,000 to Dumbell's Bank. He was declared bankrupt in December 1900
