SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny (ca. 485-466 BC). AR tetradrachm (25mm, 17.31 gm, 2h). Time of Gelon I, 480-475 BC. Walking quadriga driven by charioteer right; above, Nike flying right to crown horses / ΣYRΑΚΟΣ-ΙΩΝ, pearl-diademed head of Arethusa right, wearing beaded necklace; hair gathered in short tail; all surrounded by four dolphins swimming clockwise. Boehringer 174 (V76/R121). HGC 2, 1306. A superb example of this early Syracuse issue. Detailed strike, nicely centered on a broad flan, and beautifully toned. NGC XF 5/5 - 4/5.
