SICILY. Syracuse. Agathocles (317-289 BC). AR tetradrachm (26mm, 17.20 gm, 6h). Struck as king, ca. 305-295 BC. Wreathed head of Kore right, wearing single-pendant earring and necklace; KOPAΣ behind / AΓAΘOKΛEIOΣ, Nike standing right, erecting trophy; triskeles to left. HGC 2, 1536. SNG ANS 679. A splendid example of the so-called "African style" variant of this type, deeply struck in choice metal on a broad flan. Lovely light toning with a hint of iridescence around devices. NGC AU 5/5 - 4/5.
