Ancients
LYDIAN KINGDOM. Alyattes or Walwet (ca. 610-561 BC). Plated (fourrée) EL/Æ 1/6th stater or hecte (10mm, 1.84 gm). Confronting lion's heads, only the left-facing one visible; WALWET (in Lydian script) before / Two incuse square punches side-by-side. Cf. Weidauer Group XVII, 103. Cf. Weidauer 99. cf. SNG Kayhan 1012. Very rare! NGC XF 5/5 - 3/5 core visible. As soon as coins were invented in the mid-7th century BC, counterfeiters followed quickly in their wake. The existence of this rare fourrée or plated Lydian trite inscribed with the name of Walwet (Alyattes), one of the earliest of all "type" coins, proves the practice of counterfeiting "official" currency goes back to the very dawn of coinage.

Estimate: 800-1000 USD
