Nude rider dismounting from horse rearing right, whip in right hand / KEΛEN, goat kneeling right, head left; in exergue, dolphin right. Casabonne type 4. SNG Levante 23. SNG Copenhagen 83 (same dies). Unusually well-struck from fresh dies, the rider displaying full musculature. NGC AU 5/5 - 4/5.This energetic obverse composition depicts a horseman vaulting from his mount. At a time of only rudimentary saddles and no stirrups, riders were rated by their ability to maintain their seat and to quickly mount and dismount as needed. In fact what may depicted here is a participant in an athletic and/or military competition.
