ARABIA. Gerrha. Abi'el (?)(ca. 240-230 BC). AR drachm (17mm, 3.83 gm, 12h). Imitating Alexander III the Great of Macedon. Head of Heracles right, wearing lion skin headdress / Male figure seated left on backless throne, holding large eagle on right arm, dotted staff in left hand; in left field, uncertain letters; ANEΛIΛ Δ to right. Cf. HGC 10, 687 (figure holding eagle instead of horse forepart, more legible Greek inscription). Possibly unique and unpublished in the standard references. Dark gray patina. Good Extremely Fine. The attribution is based on the similarity in type and the phonetic sound of the rough Greek inscription on the reverse, which is close to the name Abi'el, a known ruler of Gerrha from the mid-third century BC. Other recorded coins of Abi'el either have either illegible or Aramaic inscriptions.
