JUDAEA. Herodian Kings. Herod I the Great (40-4 BC). Æ half-prutah (8mm, 0.53 gm, 12h). Jerusalem. [HPΩΔOY] BACIΛ[EΩC], tripod / Grape bunch on vine. TJC 58. Hendin 1187. HGC 10, 668. One of the rarest coins of Herod I, and superior to other known specimens. Green patina with red earthen fields. Extremely Fine. The Menorah Coin Project (http://www.menorahcoinproject.org), a widely used online database of Judaean coinage, lists only three other known examples of this extremely rare type for Herod I. This specimen is better-centered and features much more of the obverse legend than to the other three examples pictured.
