EGYPT. Alexandria. Julia Mamaea (Augusta, AD 222-235). Æ drachm (34mm, 19.70 gm, 12h). Dated RY 10 of Alexander (AD 230/1). IY MAMЄA CEB MHT CEB K CTPA, draped bust of mamaea right, wearing stephane / Date L I above Nike driving racing quadriga right, holding wreath; far horse looking back. Emmett --. Dattari --. Milne --. Extremely rare! Green patina with red earthen fields, likely repatinated or enhanced. Obverse die a little worn, otherwise Good Very Fine. The 10th year of Severus Alexander (AD 230/1) saw a sudden output of large bronze drachms from the Alexandria mint, a denomination which had not been issued for several decades previous. Although many different reverse types were struck, the issue was not numerically large and all types remain quite rare today. Emmett lists 26 drachm types (3237-3262) for Julia Mamaea, most of which get his highest rarity ratings (4 or 5), and all of which date to year 10; the only Nike type (3251) is Nike flying right. This remarkable Nike-driving-quadriga type is hitherto unrecorded and likely unique.

Estimate: 600-800 USD
