Augustus (27 BC-AD 14). AR denarius (19mm, 3.96 gm, 12h). Spain, Colonia Patricia(?), 19-18 BC. Laureate head of Augustus right, no legend / CAESAR AVGVSTVS S-P-Q-R, small shield (Clipeus Virtutis) inscribed CL V between two laurel branches. RIC -- (omitted in error, cf. 52a for aureus of this type). BMCRE 354. RSC 51. Deeply struck from fresh dies and lightly toned. NGC Choice XF 5/5 - 4/5. Among the honors voted by the Roman Senate to Augustus was the Clipeus Virtutis, or shield of valor, which was given, along with branches of laurel, to a soldier who had saved the life of a comrade in battle. Here we see the shield and laurel branches along with the formula S P Q R (for Senatus Populusque Romanus-- the Senate and People of Rome).
