RIC 72. BMCRE 98. Hendin 1603a. Rare. Reddish-brown patina with some areas of roughness in fields. A very presentable example of this rare and controversial type, with a fine pedigree. NGC Fine 5/5 - 2/5.Ex Zvi Stahl Collection (Archaeological Center, Tel Aviv, 4 October 2004), lot 22. Displayed at the Bible Lands Museum, Jerusalem, special exhibit The Jewish Presence In Ancient Rome, 1995, and illustrated in the guide book. There is ongoing discussion regarding whether this coin actually commemorates the elimination of the insult of the tax on Jews or the cessation of the insult to the Emperor of the Jews continuing to pay taxes to Jerusalem (cf. Hendin pp. 457-458). For a fascinating discussion of this coin as it relates to the separation between Judaism and early Christianity see Marius Heemstra's recent book The Fiscus Judaicus and the Parting of the Ways.
