Maximian (AD 286-305). AR argenteus (19mm, 3.08 gm, 1h). Irregular or "barbarous" issue, ca. AD 294, imitating Rome. MAXIMI-ANVS AVG, laureate head of Maximian right / VIRTVS MILITVM, the four Tetrarchs sacrificing over tripod set before circuit of city walls with six turrets. Cf. RIC 40b and RSC 622g. A very closely contemporary imitation, detectable only by the somewhat rough style of portraiture and the sketchy treatment of the laurel wreath. Rare as such! NGC Choice AU 5/5 - 4/5.
