Carolingian. Charles the Simple (898-923) Denier ND AU58 NGC, Undetermined mint in West Francia, MG-1437 var, Dep-1197 var. + CΛRLVS REX, cross pattée / X+RIΛNΛRIIIcIO, Karolus monogram. An interesting piece, probably a later issue for the type with a mildly blundered legend, quite similar to MG-1437 but more different from Dep-1197, which does not have blundered legends and cites the cross and monogram as being on opposite sides from the present example. The strike is superb and the level of preservation remarkable, with stunning tone throughout the fields.
