Battle of Ghuznee (Afghanistan) gold Military Campaign Medal 1839 AU - Holed, 23mm/7.76gms. Struck in 20K gold. Obv. Fortress with GHUZNEE in banner below. Rev. Wreath with date and crown inside. An unissued example of the type in gold, with a tiny piercing for clasp suspension at 12 o'clock, otherwise no noteworthy flaws. After Waterloo, the second campaign-specific medal of Britain to be awarded, and extremely rare in gold, with this being the first we have seen.The Ghuznee medal was issued for participation in the storming of the fortress of Ghuznee in Afghanistan that took place from July 21st to 23rd, 1839, during the First Anglo-Afghan War. After the conflict, these medals were ordered to be struck by Shuja Shah Durrani to show his appreciation of the British forces that helped him restore his throne.
